I recently spent some time in Kentucky helping with a new niece, and the first time I went running in my sister-in-law and brother-in-law’s neighborhood, I saw something interesting by their neighbor’s front porch. It looked like a quote or something embedded in the brick next to their front door, but I couldn’t see what it said. But I figured it must be pretty important because…it was set into the brick. I was so curious to know what that plaque said! So I told my brother-in-law about it, and since he was curious too, he flew his drone just close enough so we could see what it said:
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” ~Joshua 24:15
I Instantly knew what this family stands for, their priorities, their family goal, and what’s most important to them. After all, it’s set in brick by their front door for anyone who goes to their house to see.
It’s a commitment that can’t easily be changed.
It made me think…
- What would our front door plaque say?
- What would it say about what we stand for, our family foundation, our priorities, our family goal, and what’s most important to us?
- Am I afraid to share my commitments with the world, as if they’re set in brick by our front door?
- How solid are my commitments? Are they “set in brick”? Or are they fluid? Do they change too often?
- Do my daily habits and actions align with what our front door plaque would say? I know it wouldn’t be 100% all of the time (because that’s impossible), but what would my average daily percentage be?
I was so grateful I saw this on my first run and on every run while I was in Kentucky because it really made me think and reevaluate my life and how well I keep my commitments, and I think it’s a powerful message for a front door or for anywhere, actually.
What would your front door plaque say?
