I firmly believe that words—the words we say to ourselves and about ourselves—can be so powerful in both negative and positive ways. Hopefully, in more positive ways. So as I’ve done in past years, I’ve chosen a word for the year, which is a word that I’m hoping will help to keep me focused on my actions towards my goals.
What is my word for 2020?
Here’s why:
My focus this year is to try to make sure everything I do is moving me closer to my goals—to becoming the person I want to become. To do that, my actions need to be intentional.
To accomplish this, I need to…
- Make choices that are deliberate and well thought out
- Keep a laser-like focus on my goals and how I spend my time
- Not get distracted by the seemingly gazillion distractions I face every. single. day
It also means being intentional about making time for me so I can keep my bucket full. This means time for sleep, working out (especially for running!), John, scripture study, reading, time with family, time with friends, healthy eating, continuing education, hobbies, and even some time to just enjoy a favorite movie or show.
And as in years past, I had a necklace engraved with my word of the year so I can have a constant reminder of my focus for this year.
As I go through 2020, I’m trying to ask myself this question when I need to make a choice:
Is it leading me to my goals or away from them?
Because I know there’s no fence sitting when I’m trying to get better and achieve my goals.
